What soils are helical piles best suited for?
Time:2024-11-29
Helical piles are an ideal solution for construction on all types of soils, especially sand.

The first soil types that helical piles are best suited for medium dense sands and stiff to very stiff clay soils.

Installing helical piles on sand may seem like a daunting task. But helical piles are actually the easiest and safest way to create foundations on all kinds of ground, including sand. Helical piles have better load-bearing capacity than standard steel piles due to the larger surface area of the helix. This means that they have adequate load-bearing capacity even in layers of clay or sand. Helical piles do not need to be driven as deep as driven piles, so pile lengths tend to be shorter than driven pile foundations and costs are lower. And, if there is a more solid soil underneath the sand, helical piles are more likely to create a stronger foundation.

In addition to mechanical installation, helical piles also work well in ice areas and frozen ground.
